India celebrates 75th anniversary of Hindi as official language

New Delhi: India marked the 75th anniversary of Hindi being adopted as the official language of the Union with a grand celebration on Hindi Diwas, also referred to as the Diamond Jubilee of Rajbhasha. The occasion commemorated the historic decision made by the Constituent Assembly on September 14, 1949, when Hindi, in the Devanagari script, was officially designated as the Union’s primary language.

The event, organized by the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs, highlighted the significant role Hindi has played in India’s administrative and cultural landscape. Since its establishment in 1975, the Department has been instrumental in promoting the use of Hindi in official matters.

In honour of this momentous occasion, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, unveiled a commemorative postage stamp in a ceremony held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The stamp pays tribute to Hindi’s role in uniting the country and reflects on its influence in shaping a diverse yet unified nation.

Stamp celebrates Hindi’s cultural and historical contribution

Speaking at the event, Union Minister of Communications and Development of Northern Region, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, praised Hindi’s contributions over the last 75 years, emphasizing its role in promoting national unity. “The stamp celebrates the contribution of the Hindi language in carrying forward the culture and history of India and highlights its role in building a New and Viksit Bharat,” he said.

Scindia expressed hope that the commemorative stamp would continue to remind future generations of the importance of Hindi in fostering peace and unity within the country and abroad.
