New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India commenced its third two-week Online Short-Term Internship Programme for the year on Tuesday, with 100 university students from across the country. The program aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of human rights issues and challenges faced by vulnerable sections of society, encouraging them to become future Human Rights Defenders.

Focus on human rights awareness and empathy

Inaugurating the event, NHRC Secretary General Bharat Lal emphasized the Commission’s crucial role in promoting and protecting human rights as the conscience keeper of society. He urged the interns to make the most of this opportunity, highlighting India’s deep-rooted commitment to safeguarding human rights since ancient times, and its history of providing refuge to persecuted communities. “Our legislative measures and policy reforms are designed to protect civil, political, social, and cultural rights, ensuring dignity for all,” Lal stated.

Internship overview and activities

Joint Secretary Devendra Kumar Nim outlined the structure of the internship, which includes expert sessions on various human rights issues, as well as individual and group activities to enhance participants’ understanding. Interns will engage in virtual tours of jails, police stations, NGOs, and shelter homes to gain practical insights into the functioning and challenges of these institutions.

Outreach and accessibility through online programs

Director Lt Col Virender Singh delivered the vote of thanks, emphasizing NHRC’s efforts to promote human rights through various activities, including online internships. The online format enables students from remote areas to participate without incurring travel and accommodation expenses, ensuring inclusivity and broader outreach.
