NHRC takes suo motu action on electrocution deaths of tribal students

New Delhi : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report concerning the tragic deaths of two tribal students who were electrocuted while cleaning a water tank at a government-run hostel in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district. The incident occurred on 25th September 2024, and the NHRC has called for a detailed report from the state authorities.
Human rrights violation concerns raised
According to the NHRC, the deaths of the students, who belonged to a Scheduled Tribe, reflect a serious violation of human rights. The Commission expressed concerns over the insensitive actions of the hostel authorities, who allegedly assigned the hazardous task of cleaning a water tank connected to a live wire, which led to the students’ fatal electrocution.
NHRC issues notice to Madhya Pradesh authorities
In response, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of Madhya Pradesh, demanding a comprehensive report within two weeks. The report is expected to include the status of the police investigation and details of any compensation provided to the families of the deceased.

The incident came to light when villagers discovered the students’ bodies inside the water tank and informed hostel authorities. The deaths have triggered outrage, with many calling for accountability and justice for the victims.
