Three-day NHRC training focuses on strengthening human rights framework

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, is organizing a three-day Capacity Building Programme in New Delhi for officials from the State Human Rights Commission, Arunachal Pradesh (APSHRC). The initiative is part of the NHRC’s ongoing efforts to enhance the capabilities of State Human Rights Commissions (SHRCs) in protecting and promoting human rights across the country.

Keynote by NHRC Secretary General Bharat Lal

In his opening remarks, Bharat Lal, Secretary General of the NHRC, stressed the importance of sensitivity, promptness, and responsiveness in addressing human rights issues. He highlighted the collaborative framework between the NHRC and SHRCs, noting that effective and speedy complaint redressal fosters public trust in the system.

The training program includes interactive sessions designed to provide insights into the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 and structured NHRC processes, which are expected to be invaluable for APSHRC officials.

APSHRC Chairperson highlights importance of training

Speaking at the event, APSHRC Acting Chairperson Bamang Tago expressed gratitude to the NHRC for organizing the program. He underscored its significance for the relatively new APSHRC, particularly in understanding the registration, handling, and resolution of human rights cases. Tago remarked that the training would deepen participants’ grasp of human values and rights, benefiting both the institution and individuals involved.

Sessions on key NHRC functions

Devendra Kumar Nim, Joint Secretary of the NHRC, detailed the program’s agenda, which includes:

Complaint handling and processing: Registration, inquiry, and resolution methods. Training and research: Strategies for education and analysis of human rights issues. International mechanisms: Understanding global human rights standards. Outreach activities: Enhancing public awareness and communication through media and publications.

Nim emphasized that the training aims to equip participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to work more efficiently while fostering a shared vision for promoting human rights.

A step towards robust human rights mechanisms

The program is expected to empower the APSHRC to function more effectively in addressing human rights violations, ensuring justice for victims, and building trust in institutional mechanisms. Through this initiative, the NHRC continues to reinforce its commitment to strengthening the country’s human rights framework.
