Telangana :- Telangana SC ST BC Minority Vidyarthi Yuvajan Sangham (TVYS) State President, Gavvala Srikanth, has raised grave concerns about the alarming number of student deaths in gurukulam schools in Telangana. He cited the most recent incidents including the death of an 8th-grade student, Advit, at Peddpur gurukulam school in Metpalli Mandal of Jagityala District, a 10th grade student at Dhanwada Tribal gurukulam school, an inter-second year student at Telangana Minority Girls’ gurukulam school in Lakshmi Nagar, Manchiryala, a student at Bhuvanagiri SC gurukulam school, and a 9th-grade student at Mustabad gurukulam school. Also, numerous students have fallen ill at KGBV School in Narsapur (G) Mandal and Sultanabad gurukulam school.
Negligence: A dire Situation for students
Srikanth accused school officials and staff of gross negligence, which he claims are directly responsible for these tragedies. He highlighted several issues, such as staff failing to adhere to student menus, neglecting their duties, and not ensuring that students are properly fed or cared for. This negligence extends to a lack of health workers and local principal staff employees, exacerbating the dire conditions in these schools.
Srikanth further emphasized that some staff members continue to serve as in-charges while prioritizing their own benefits over student welfare. The result is a dangerous environment where students’ lives are put at risk due to inadequate care and supervision.
Demands for accountability and reform
In response to these incidents, Srikanth has demanded immediate action, including the suspension and dismissal of negligent staff. He called for compensation of Rs 50 lakh for the families of deceased students, employment for one family member, and the provision of 5 acres of cultivated land to support them.
Additionally, Srikanth urged for the appointment of regular staff to ensure proper facilities and care for students. He called for weekly inspections by doctors and officials, accompanied by representatives from student and youth groups, to monitor and improve conditions in these schools.
Srikanth and other state and district leaders, including Thigala Shekhar, Mohammad Rahim, and Dasari Venkati, plan to meet with higher authorities to investigate these issues and demand swift and effective action to prevent further tragedies and ensure the safety and well-being of students in Telangana’s gurukulam schools.
