Big Relief for Rural India: Govt Secures MGNREGA, PMAY-G and PMGSY Amid West Asia Crisis

By Doruvu Paul Jagan Babu: Assistant Chief Editor

New Delhi: Amid concerns over the evolving situation in West Asia and its potential impact on global supply chains, inflation and commodity prices, the Ministry of Rural Development has undertaken a comprehensive review to ensure uninterrupted implementation of key rural welfare and infrastructure programmes, including MGNREGA, PMAY-G and PMGSY, while strengthening mechanisms to safeguard rural livelihoods.

Monitoring global developments, ensuring continuity

The Ministry stated that it is closely tracking international developments, particularly in West Asia, which may indirectly affect rural sectors through supply chain disruptions and price volatility. Proactive systems have been put in place to maintain steady fund flow, ensure timely delivery of benefits, and avoid any disruption in ongoing schemes.

MGNREGA: Employment and wage security intact

The flagship employment programme under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 will continue without interruption until the proposed VB–G RAM G Act, 2025 comes into force.

All statutory entitlements, including demand-based employment and timely wage payments, remain unchanged.
Existing wage rates notified by the Centre will continue.
To ensure liquidity, about ₹17,744 crore is being released as the first instalment for wage payments.

The proposed new legislation is expected to enhance employment guarantee to 125 days, with revised wage rates to be announced later.

PMAY-G: Housing push with supply safeguards

Under Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana–Gramin, the government aims to construct 4.95 crore houses by March 2029.

To counter possible disruptions:

Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT) are being prioritised for timely fund release.
Real-time monitoring via AwaasSoft and geo-tagging is being intensified.
Faster completion of ongoing houses is being ensured.

The scheme is also integrating support for sanitation, drinking water, LPG and electricity, while promoting material banks to mitigate future supply shocks.

PMGSY: Rural roads shielded from volatility

The rural road programme under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana remains largely insulated from global uncertainties.

Projects under PMGSY-I, II, III and LWE (Left Wing Extremism) areas are already tendered or under execution.
Around 12,100 km of roads under PMGSY-IV are at the tendering stage.
Limited exposure to global price fluctuations due to lower bitumen cost share.

Future projects will incorporate updated cost estimates based on market trends.

Boosting agriculture and resource resilience

The Department of Land Resources is implementing WDC-PMKSY 2.0 across 50 lakh hectares.

Key focus areas include:

Water conservation
Agricultural intensification
Horticulture and pasture development

The Department is coordinating with the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and other stakeholders to ensure smooth programme execution despite emerging challenges.

Focus on stability and rural growth

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to safeguarding rural livelihoods by maintaining uninterrupted programme delivery, strengthening infrastructure resilience, and ensuring that welfare benefits continue to reach beneficiaries without delay, even amid global uncertainties.
