New Delhi : Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, at the Sansad TV@3 Conclave, called on the media to move beyond individual-centric narratives and focus on developmental stories that highlight India’s progress. He stressed that the media, as the fourth pillar of democracy, must support national institutions and contribute to the country’s growth by promoting positive, constructive discourse.
Inimical forces threaten national interests
Dhankhar cautioned against associating with those harboring ill intentions toward India, stating, “We cannot fraternize with those whose positioning is inimical to Bharat. They are perniciously aspiring to offer existential challenges to Bharat.” He expressed alarm at how some individuals, both within and outside the country, malign the nation’s institutions, hindering its progress.
Media’s role in shaping national discourse
Highlighting the media’s role as the “fourth pillar of democracy,” Dhankhar urged the press to shift focus from individual – eccentric narratives to broader issues of national growth. “Our sacred institutions must not be maligned,” he remarked, stressing the importance of developmental stories over excessive criticism. “Development is not on the radar. We need to revisit our agenda.”
National image and responsibility
Dhankhar emphasized the importance of protecting India’s image on the global stage, urging every Indian abroad to act as an ambassador with unwavering commitment to the nation. He remarked, “We cannot have a wrong picture of Bharat painted outside. Every Indian must have 100% commitment to the nation.”
Respecting constitutional boundaries
Dhankhar reiterated the importance of democratic institutions adhering to their constitutional boundaries. “If one institution steps into the role of another, order will suffer,” he warned, underlining the necessity of maintaining the roles defined by the Constitution.
Learning from the past
Drawing attention to the significance of Constitution Day, Dhankhar reminded the audience of two key dates: the birthday of Dr. B R Ambedkar, who gave India its Constitution, and the date marking the declaration of the Emergency. He urged young people to be educated about the Emergency, calling it a “dark period” when liberties collapsed, and institutions failed to act. He proposed the massive projection of “Samvidhan Hatya Diwas” to ensure public awareness.
Nation’s growth beyond political divides
Dhankhar called for a collective, non-partisan approach to national development, stressing that the country’s progress should not be viewed through a political lens. He lauded India’s advancements across sectors—land, sea, sky, and space—and urged the recognition of achievements made by ordinary citizens and youth, particularly in rural areas, where affordable housing and solar-powered homes are making a difference.
Inclusivity and empowerment in education and agriculture
The Vice President took pride in the inclusivity of prestigious institutions like IITs and IIMs, which are now accessible to all, not just the elite. He also commended the government’s digital empowerment initiatives, highlighting that over 100 million farmers receive direct financial benefits through government schemes.
PC Mody, Secretary General of Rajya Sabha, Rajit Punhani, Secretary of Rajya Sabha, and Vandana Kumar, Additional Secretary of Rajya Sabha & CEO of Sansad TV, were present alongside other dignitaries during the conclave.
