NHRC seeks report on Assam journalist’s detention after bank protest

Guwahati: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report regarding the detention of a digital news portal journalist by Panbazar police in Guwahati. The journalist was taken into custody after covering a protest outside the Assam Cooperative Apex Bank Ltd, where demonstrators demanded a high-level probe into alleged financial irregularities.
NHRC raises concerns over human rights violation
Observing that the incident may indicate a violation of press freedom and human rights, the NHRC has issued a notice to the Director General of Police, Assam, seeking a detailed report within four weeks.
Journalist detained after questioning bank MD
The detained journalist had reportedly questioned the bank’s Managing Director about the alleged financial misconduct before being summoned to the Panbazar police station. However, no official reason for his detention was cited.
Protestors demand inquiry into financial irregularities
According to reports, the protestors outside the bank had been calling for a thorough investigation into the alleged mismanagement of funds and strict action against those responsible.
