Telangana: Hyderabad-based journalist Revathi Pogadadanda was arrested in a pre-dawn police operation, triggering condemnation from the Editors Guild of India (EGI), which has called for due process and press freedom safeguards.

Arrest sparks outrage

The Hyderabad Cybercrime Police arrested journalist Revathi Pogadadanda early Wednesday morning, reportedly taking her and her husband from their home. The move has drawn criticism from the Editors Guild of India (EGI), which expressed “grave concern” over the action.

Trigger: Video criticizing Chief Minister

Pogadadanda’s arrest is believed to be linked to a video published on her YouTube channel, where a farmer allegedly criticized the Telangana Chief Minister. Some reports suggest the video contained derogatory language and did not adhere to journalistic ethics.

Call for due process

While refraining from commenting on the video’s content, the EGI urged the Telangana government to ensure that any action against journalists adheres to due process and upholds press freedom. The pre-dawn nature of the arrest, it said, raises serious concerns about police overreach.

Appeal for press freedom and responsibility

The Guild also emphasized the need for journalists to maintain fairness and responsibility in their reportage. It reiterated that a free and responsible press is vital to democracy and called on authorities to safeguard Pogadadanda’s rights and personal safety.

EGI leadership stands firm

The statement issued by EGI, underscores the organization’s commitment to protecting journalistic freedom.
