Kalamalla – YSR District: Former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu called on all Telugu-speaking people to take a pledge to communicate in their mother tongue, emphasizing the importance of preserving and promoting the Telugu language. His remarks came during the Telugu Language Day celebrations organized at Kalamalla in Yerraguntla mandal, YSR district, the site of the first known Telugu inscription dating back to 575 AD.
The district administration chose this historically significant location to mark the occasion, highlighting the deep cultural roots of the Telugu language.
Historic significance of Kalamalla
Kalamalla holds a special place in Telugu history as the site of the first Telugu inscription, written by the Chola king Dhanunjaya in 575 AD. This inscription is a key piece of evidence in the study of the Telugu language’s antiquity and has been preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India’s Department of Epigraphy. “The Telugu inscription here is a testament to our rich linguistic heritage, and it’s imperative that we preserve it for future generations,” Venkaiah Naidu said during his visit to the site on Thursday.
He also urged the state government to develop the Kalamalla area into a tourist destination, which would not only honour the region’s historical importance but also promote the Telugu language and culture to a broader audience.
Call to action for Telugu language preservation
Speaking as the chief guest, Venkaiah Naidu passionately advocated for the use of Telugu in daily life. “Let us take a pledge today that from now on, all Telugu people must speak in their mother tongue,” he urged. “Our language is our identity, and we must take pride in it. By using Telugu in our homes, schools, and workplaces, we can ensure that our language continues to thrive.”
Naidu praised the efforts of the district administration, led by Collector Sivashankar, for organizing the Telugu Language Day celebrations in Kalamalla. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the officials and leaders involved in the event, acknowledging their dedication to promoting the Telugu language.
Celebration of Telugu heritage
The program, which included participation from Jammalamadugu MLA Adinarayana Reddy and Rayalaseema BJP leaders, was a grand celebration of Telugu heritage. “This is not just a celebration, but a yajna (sacred offering) for the Telugu language,” Naidu remarked, highlighting the collective effort required to preserve the language.
Naidu’s message resonated with the attendees, many of whom are committed to ensuring that Telugu remains a vibrant and integral part of their cultural identity. The event concluded with a renewed commitment to promoting and preserving the Telugu language for future generations.
