Chennai: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh released a commemorative coin on Sunday, in Chennai to mark the birth centenary of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. Singh praised Karunanidhi as a towering figure in Indian politics, a champion of social justice, and a cultural icon.

Tribute to a Titan of Indian Politics

In his address, Rajnath Singh highlighted Karunanidhi’s deep commitment to Tamil identity while emphasizing the unity of the nation. “He understood that India’s strength lies in its diversity, and his advocacy for state rights was a call for balanced power distribution within the Union,” Singh remarked.

Advocate for social justice

Singh lauded Karunanidhi’s efforts in promoting gender equality and empowering marginalized communities. He noted that Karunanidhi’s government was instrumental in enacting legislation for 33% reservation for women in local bodies and forming Women Self Help Groups. “His work is a reminder that a nation’s progress is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable citizens,” Singh said.

Focus on education and infrastructure

As an able administrator, Karunanidhi prioritized education and infrastructure development. Singh referred to Karunanidhi’s ‘Manu Nidhi Thittam’ program, where district officials reserved one day a week to listen to public grievances. “His vision extended beyond Tamil Nadu, recognizing that regional development contributes to national progress,” Singh added.

Commitment to cooperative federalism

Singh emphasized the government’s belief in cooperative federalism and highlighted initiatives like the Defence Industrial Corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu as examples of development beyond partisan politics. He also mentioned cultural initiatives like Kashi-Tamil Sangamam and Saurashtra-Tamil Samgamam that celebrate the integration of different regions of India.

Cultural stalwart and literary icon

Singh described Karunanidhi as a prolific writer, poet, and playwright who enriched Tamil literature and cinema. “His promotion of Tamil language and culture was rooted in his belief that preserving cultural identity is essential to the broader Indian identity,” Singh stated. The event was attended by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, Union Minister Dr. L Murugan, and other dignitaries.
