Candle rally demands severe punishment for accused in Kolkata doctor’s murder case

Amalapuram – Andhra Pradesh: A candlelight rally was organized at the Clock Tower Center in Amalapuram on Sunday, demanding stringent action against those responsible for the rape and murder of Dr. Maumita Debnath, a woman doctor from Kolkata. The protest, led by the United Teachers Federation (UTF), the Indian Student Federation (SFI), and various public associations, saw participants calling for justice and the protection of women in the medical field.

MLC IVR demands immediate action

Godavari District Graduate MLC, Illa Venkateswara Rao, who participated in the rally, voiced strong criticism against the state government. “It is imperative that the accused in Dr. Maumita’s case face severe punishment. The High Court has acknowledged the existence of a sex gang, human organ trafficking ring, and a drug network behind this heinous crime, yet the state government’s response has been inadequate,” he said. Rao emphasized the need for immediate identification and punishment of all those involved in the crime.

SFI criticizes state and central governments

SFI State Vice President Rammohan raised concerns about the lack of transparency and action in the case. “The state government is obstructing the truth from coming out regarding Dr. Maumita’s murder, leading to nationwide outrage. Moreover, the central government has failed to curb the proliferation of obscene websites that are corrupting our youth,” Rammohan argued, highlighting the broader societal issues contributing to such crimes.

UTF leaders highlight rising violence against women

UTF District President , Secretary Penke Venkateswara Rao and MTV Subbarao expressed alarm over the increasing incidents of violence against women. “Every 30 minutes, a woman is raped in this country. During this period, nearly 9,000 cases of murder and rape have been registered across the nation,” they noted. The leaders called for urgent measures to address this alarming trend and demanded comprehensive protection for all women doctors, nurses, and medical staff nationwide.

Unified call for government action

Participants in the rally unanimously demanded that the government take decisive steps to safeguard women in the healthcare profession. The event saw the participation of District Secretaries Pennada Srinivas, B Chandrakala, Kudupudi Srinivas, Y Murali Krishna, SFI leaders K Shankar, Shashi, and Agricultural Labour Union leaders Kaarem Venkateswara Rao, and Srinu, among others. The rally served as a strong message to the authorities to act swiftly and ensure justice for Dr. Maumita.
