Empowering vision: NIEPVD celebrates World Braille Day with key initiatives

Dehradun: The National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities (NIEPVD), Dehradun, celebrated World Braille Day on Saturday, marking the 216th birth anniversary of Louis Braille. The event highlighted the transformative power of Braille in empowering visually impaired individuals and fostering inclusivity.

Key highlight: Launch of ‘Standard Bharati Braille Codes

The event’s centerpiece was the virtual release of the book ‘Standard Bharati Braille Codes’ by Chief Guest Rajesh Aggarwal, Secretary, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD). The book provides a unified guide to standardized Braille unicodes in India, representing a milestone in accessibility for visually impaired individuals.

Shri Rajesh Aggarwal emphasized Braille’s role in enhancing accessibility and inclusivity for Divyangjans.

NIEPVD Director, Er. Manish Verma, highlighted the script’s significance in education and self-reliance for visually impaired individuals.

Virtual attendees included Manmeet Kaur Nanda, Joint Secretary, DEPwD, and Dipendra Manocha, President of Daisy Forum India.

The celebration paid tribute to Louis Braille’s pioneering work, which transformed the lives of millions by enabling literacy and independence for the visually impaired.
