By Doruvu Paul Jagan Babu: Assistant Chief Editor

Andhra Pradesh: CITU, IFTU, and Rythu Kooli Sangham leaders staged a protest in front of the MRO office in Yemmiganur, condemning the sudden removal of 3,500 contract workers from Visakha Steel Plant and demanding immediate reinstatement and payment of pending wages.

Protest held in solidarity with steel plant workers

The dharna was organized under the joint banner of CITU, IFTU, and Rythu Kooli Sangham as part of a statewide agitation. Leaders criticized the sudden termination of contract workers without notice, calling it an unjust move that endangered the livelihoods of thousands of families.

Tribute to historic sacrifices for Visakha Steel

Speakers recalled the sacrifices made for the establishment and protection of Visakha Steel, including the martyrdom of 32 workers and the resignations of 52 Communist Party MLAs in earlier decades. They emphasized the plant’s importance as a symbol of Andhra pride and economic strength.

Broken promises by government and leaders

Union leaders reminded the public of pre-election assurances made by central and state leaders, including promises from Union Minister Kumaraswamy and Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, that Visakha Steel would not be privatized and no worker would be laid off. They criticized the current government for not honoring these commitments.

Workers await wages, families in distress

The unions condemned the delay in payment of eight months’ wages to the terminated contract workers, stating that the financial distress has severely impacted their families. They demanded immediate financial support, including free food assistance, until the workers are reinstated.

Warning of escalation if demands are ignored

Leaders declared that if the government fails to address the issue promptly, the agitation will be intensified across the state. A formal petition outlining their demands was submitted to the Emmiganur MRO during the protest.

The protest was led by CITU Taluka Secretary B Ramadu, IFTU Taluka Secretary S Balaraju, IFTU Secretary Anif, and Rythu Kooli Sangam leaders M Sattanna and BA Saif. Several workers and activists also participated.
