Celebrating Mahatma Gandhi’s enduring legacy on International Day of Non-Violence

By Doruvu Paul Jagan Babu:Bureau Chief

The International Day of Non-Violence, observed annually on October 2, commemorates the birth of Mahatma Gandhi and his timeless philosophy of peace, truth, and non-violence. As global challenges persist, Gandhi’s teachings offer a powerful guide toward building a more harmonious world.

Gandhi’s philosophy of non-Violence

Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of Satyagraha and non-violent resistance remain a profound influence on modern movements for justice. His leadership in peaceful protests, such as the Dandi March, exemplified his belief in non-violence as a potent force for change. Gandhi’s words, “Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind,” continue to inspire leaders and movements worldwide, from Martin Luther King Jr. to Nelson Mandela.

Relevance in today’s world

In a world facing political, social, and environmental challenges, Gandhi’s belief in peaceful solutions is more relevant than ever. His wisdom extends beyond political resistance, touching on sustainability and responsible resource use. Gandhi’s call for moderation—”There is enough for everyone’s need, but not for everyone’s greed”—resonates today in initiatives like India’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

Honouring Gandhi’s legacy globally

The International Day of Non-Violence is a global commemoration of Gandhi’s contributions. At the G20 Summit 2023, world leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, paid tribute to Gandhi at Rajghat, reaffirming his influence on global peace efforts. Similarly, UNESCO’s event in 2022 featured a hologram of Gandhi leading a panel on education for peace.

Modern initiatives inspired by Gandhi

Government campaigns like the Swachh Bharat Mission reflect Gandhi’s vision of cleanliness and self-reliance. The 2024 Swachhata Hi Seva campaign, promoting behavioural change for a cleaner India, culminated on Gandhi Jayanti. Additionally, the inauguration of a restored railway coach at Gandhi Darshan by Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat serves as a tribute to Gandhi’s transformative train journeys.

Khadi: A symbol of self-reliance

Gandhi’s advocacy for self-reliance lives on through Khadi, a hand-spun fabric symbolizing simplicity and economic independence. On Gandhi Jayanti 2023, record sales at Khadi Bhawan in New Delhi reflect public support for this enduring symbol of sustainability.

A call for non-violent action

As we observe the International Day of Non-Violence, Gandhi’s teachings remind us that peace is not just an ideal but an achievable goal. By embracing non-violence in our personal and collective lives, we honour Gandhi’s legacy and continue to build a better world for future generations.
