Proddatur – Andhra Pradesh: The local leaders of Movement for Peace and Justice (MPJ) met with the newly appointed Municipal Commissioner of Proddatur, Mallikarjuna, on Thursday, extending their congratulations and submitting a memorandum highlighting the plight of stray cows in the town, urging immediate action for their safety and that of the public.

Cows in peril: MPJ seeks relief measures

Leaders of the MPJ organization, on behalf of the Proddatur residents, have expressed serious concerns about stray cows wandering the streets. These cows, unable to find sufficient food, are resorting to eating plastic and other waste materials. “The cows are consuming plastic along with edible waste, leading to severe health problems,” said MPJ Town President S Hussain Basha.

He added that this has resulted in cows becoming sick, and the issue is becoming a growing concern for the cows’ welfare.

Night-time hazards for motorists and pedestrians

The memorandum particularly pointed to the danger posed by cows sleeping on major roads at night, such as Jammalamadugu Road, Mydukur Road, and Gandhi Road. “At night, the cows rest on the streets, causing traffic disruptions and accidents. Both motorists and the cows are at risk of serious harm,” emphasized Hussain Basha.

These incidents have led to an alarming number of accidents, with people and animals alike suffering injuries that have resulted in hospital visits.

Appeal for action

The MPJ requested that the Municipal Commissioner take immediate action by summoning the owners of the cows and handing them back to ensure their proper care. “If not, we urge the municipality to transfer these cows to goshalas (cow shelters) where they can be looked after safely,” added MPJ Secretary Rafique.

The MPJ has asked for swift measures to protect both the town’s residents and the cows from further harm. They stressed the need for proactive efforts from the municipal authorities to tackle the issue effectively and protect the community from preventable accidents.

Commissioner commends initiative and assures resolution

In response, Commissioner Mallikarjuna appreciated the initiative taken by the MPJ and assured that the issue of stray cattle would be resolved. Emphasizing community support, he said that it is the responsibility of both authorities and citizens to ensure the safety of all animals and people in the town.

The meeting was attended by key members of the MPJ, including Town Vice President Nazeer Basha, Secretary Rafique, Media Secretary Aslam, and activist Allabaksh. They agreed that it is the duty of both the residents and authorities to ensure the safety of all animals and pedestrians on the streets of Proddatur, as the memorandum highlights the concerns.
