New Delhi: In a passionate address in Lok Sabha on Wednesdya, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition, called for the Wayanad landslides to be declared a national disaster. Gandhi, who recently visited the affected area with his sister, described the devastating impact of the disaster and criticized the lack of opportunity for Members of Parliament to address the issue.
Gandhi’s eye-witness account
Gandhi recounted the catastrophic scenes he witnessed in Wayanad, stating, “Almost two kilometers of the hill had collapsed, sending a torrent of mud and stones down, resulting in more than 200 confirmed deaths and potentially over 400 casualties.” He praised the efforts of various agencies, including the Union and State Governments, NDRF, SDRF, the Army, Navy, Coast Guards, and local administrations for their response. He also highlighted the unity among different communities in aiding the affected.
Call for comprehensive rehabilitation and enhanced compensation
Gandhi urged the Union Government to implement a comprehensive rehabilitation package for Wayanad, focusing on building disaster-resilient infrastructure and supporting the affected communities. He also called for an increase in compensation for the victims and their families.
Personal observations and appreciation
Describing the tragedy as particularly severe, Gandhi noted that in some cases, entire families had been wiped out, leaving only one survivor. He expressed his profound sadness and extended thanks to the entire house for their support for Wayanad’s victims.
Gandhi’s appeal underscores the urgent need for national attention and support for Wayanad’s recovery efforts in the wake of this devastating landslide.
