Andhra Pradesh:- The unexpected outcomes of the Andhra Pradesh (AP) elections have reignited a fierce debate over the integrity of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Both members of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and the general public are expressing doubts about the election results, leading to widespread speculation about EVM tampering, hacking, and unlocking. In a significant statement on his X account, YSRCP Chief YS Jaganmohan Reddy emphasized the need for transparency and confidence in the democratic process:

“Justice is not the only important thing. It should also appear to have happened. Also, democracy must win and appear to have won without a doubt. Paper ballots are used for the election process in most democratic countries around the world, not EVMs. We should also move forward in the same direction to maintain the original spirit of democracy,” he stated.

Following the announcement of the 2024 general election results, discussions on EVM tampering have gained momentum nationwide. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has asserted that banning EVMs is essential for democracy’s survival. Former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar refuted Musk’s claims, but Musk reiterated that anything can be hacked. Shyam Pitroda, a key figure in India’s telecom revolution, also contributed to the debate, noting that EVM hacking is a recent concern.

Despite the Election Commission’s assurances that EVM tampering is impossible, the latest election results have fuelled public skepticism. In light of this, YS Jagan has called for a return to traditional paper ballots to preserve democratic integrity.

Analysts have pointed out that former I-PAC member Prashant Kishore predicted a disastrous outcome for YSRCP in several interviews, raising questions about his foresight and potential awareness of EVM manipulation. Critics argue that former Chief Minister YS Jagan should have raised doubts about EVMs when his party won 151 seats.

Some analysts note that concerns about EVMs were first raised by veteran BJP leaders. They observe that parties and leaders who won elections have remained silent on EVM issues, only voicing objections after electoral defeats.

Social experts emphasize the responsibility of the government and the Election Commission to instill unwavering confidence in the electoral system. Ensuring that every vote is accurately registered and counted is crucial for maintaining public trust. Without this assurance, the legitimacy of the democratic process may be at risk.
