NHRC calls for investigation into alleged suicide of Guntur teen student

New Delhi & Andhra Pradesh: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has ordered a detailed probe into the alleged suicide of a 13-year-old student in a Guntur private school hostel, raising concerns about possible human rights violations under school authority supervision.
Suo motu cognizance of incident
The NHRC took suo motu cognizance following media reports of the teen’s alleged suicide on October 23 in the school hostel at Reddypalem village, Andhra Pradesh. The commission stated that if confirmed, the incident could signify a serious breach of the girl’s rights while in the school’s lawful custody.
Notice to Andhra Pradesh Authorities
The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Andhra Pradesh, demanding a comprehensive report within four weeks. The commission has called for detailed information on the ongoing police investigation and findings from the post-mortem, including any internal school inquiries into the circumstances.
Investigation details sought
Authorities are required to provide updates on the status of the police probe, details from the post-mortem report specifying the cause of death, and findings from any other investigations conducted, to ensure accountability and clarity on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
