Sarbjeet Singh: Bureau Chief-East

Kolkata :- Jamalpur Workshop, a beacon of innovation and sustainability within the Eastern Railway, proudly announces the successful commissioning of the largest solar plant in any workshop of the Indian Railways network. With a capacity of 3.7 MWp, this groundbreaking achievement signifies a significant milestone in the journey towards embracing renewable energy solutions.

The installation of the largest solar power plant at a single location within the Indian Railways under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model on Net-Metering demonstrates Eastern Railways unwavering commitment to sustainable energy practices.

With a tariff set at an affordable rate of 5.43/KWh, this initiative promises to revolutionize the way Eastern Railway generates electricity.

Through this endeavor, an estimated 4321 metric tons of carbon emissions will be neutralized annually. Furthermore, the solar power plant is projected to generate approximately 54 Lakhs units of electricity per year, resulting in substantial cost savings of approximately Rs. 1.28 Crores based on the SBPDCL tariff (as of April 2023).

Recently, the Electrical Department at Jamalpur Workshop officially connected the solar power plant to the State DISCOM (SBPDCL) at 33 KV, following requisite approvals from the Electrical Inspectorate General (EIG).

This momentous occasion underscores unwavering commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and adopting sustainable energy practices.

The newly commissioned solar plant is equipped with net metering facilities, enabling efficient energy management and contributing to the regional power grid. By harnessing the abundant solar resources available, Jamalpur Workshop is not only reducing its dependence on conventional energy sources but also setting a precedent for workshops nationwide.

“We are thrilled to announce the successful commissioning of the largest solar plant in the Indian Railways network,” said Shri Kausik Mitra, Chief Public Relations Officer, Eastern Railway. “This accomplishment is a testament to our dedication towards sustainability and innovation in energy management.

We believe that initiatives like these are vital steps towards a greener and more sustainable future for our railway operations.
