IFTU demands resistance to privatization at May Day rally

Yemmiganur – Andhra Pradesh: At a spirited May Day gathering in Yemmiganur, IFTU leaders condemned the central government’s labour reforms and privatization drive, calling for intensified workers’ struggles to protect hard-won rights.

May Day observed with Red Flag hoisting ceremonies

The 139th International Workers’ Day was commemorated on Thursday in Yemmiganur with red flag hoistings near the IFTU office, Nagalapuram-Kalagotla Auto Stand, and Soganur Auto Stand. The program was led by IFTU District Assistant Secretary Babu.

IFTU slams corporate control over public sector

Speaking at the event, IFTU District Leader S Balaraju criticized the growing influence of corporates over public sector enterprises. He urged resistance against privatization, warning that such moves weaken the public sector and exploit workers.

Reminder of Chicago struggles and labour movement legacy

Balaraju recalled the historic 1886 labour movement in Chicago, where thousands of workers fought for the eight-hour workday. He lamented that present-day labour rights are being steadily eroded and emphasized the need to uphold the legacy of workers’ sacrifices.

Modi government accused of anti-labour reforms

The IFTU leader strongly criticized the Narendra Modi-led central government for dismantling 44 existing labour laws and replacing them with four labour codes. He said these new codes curtail the rights to unionize and strike, inflicting deep injustice on workers.

Essential goods cost rise and tax burden highlighted

Balaraju also pointed to the rising cost of essential commodities and increased tax burdens on common people. He described these developments as a direct assault on the working class and called for united action to oppose the central and state governments’ anti-worker policies.

Broad participation from workers’ organizations

Leaders and activists from various organizations participated in the event, including AIKMS District General Secretary M Satyanna, PYL Division Convener S Muneppa, and IFTU members such as Bujjanna, Abhi, Anil, Prem, Raju, Anandu, and many others from diverse occupational backgrounds.
