New Delhi: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar emphasized the urgent need for systemic solutions to stubble burning, citing its hazardous impact on public health, work productivity, and children’s education. Speaking at the National Energy Conservation Day Function 2024 in New Delhi, he called for collective action against environmental challenges.
Stubble burning: A call for innovation
Vice President Dhankhar expressed concern over the annual pollution crisis caused by stubble burning, particularly in the National Capital. “The system must come of age… Innovation is the need of the hour. This issue cannot be left to individuals,” he stated, stressing the importance of systemic interventions. He highlighted four critical consequences of inaction: health risks, loss of work hours, disruption of daily life, and adverse effects on children.

Climate change: An equalizing threat
Calling climate change a crisis that transcends social barriers, Dhankhar urged united action. “Rich or poor, urban or rural, we either act together or perish together,” he remarked, underlining the universal nature of the problem.
Civilizational wisdom: A survival manual for conservation
Referring to India’s civilizational ethos, Dhankhar called it a “heritage and survival manual” for tackling climate emergencies. “Our Vedas, Puranas, and epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana inspire us. Conservation has always been a way of life,” he said, urging a return to traditional practices for sustainable living.
Constitutional duty to protect environment
Drawing attention to Article 51A of the Constitution, Dhankhar reminded citizens of their fundamental duty to conserve the environment. “When faced with challenges, we must prioritize duties over rights. Environmental conservation should be a way of life,” he stressed.
Responsible consumption: A collective obligation
Dhankhar also called for optimal use of natural resources, discouraging overconsumption based on financial capacity. “This is not yours alone; it is a collective responsibility to humanity. We must revisit our approach to energy and resource usage,” he stated.
