Thiruvananthapuram: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar asserted that India has evolved beyond being a nation with mere potential, transforming into a global powerhouse. Speaking at the Fourth P Parameswaran Memorial Lecture on Democracy, Demography, Development and the Future of Bharat on Sunday, Dhankhar emphasized the country’s rapid economic growth, inclusive governance, and demographic challenges.
India’s transformation: From potential to global influence
Dhankhar dismissed outdated perceptions of India, stating, “India is no longer a nation with a promise. It is charming the world with its potential.” He highlighted the country’s progress in infrastructure, rural development, and welfare schemes, crediting transparent governance for the economic surge.
Inclusive growth and welfare initiatives
The Vice President noted the transformative impact of people-centric policies, emphasizing the expansion of sanitation, electricity, gas connections, digital access, and healthcare. He described this progress as an “economic renaissance” that embodies India’s foundational values of inclusivity and equitable development.
Demographic shifts and electoral challenges
Expressing concern over “inorganic demographic transitions,” Dhankhar warned of destabilizing shifts that could undermine national unity. He criticized the influence of demographic changes on electoral outcomes, stating that “fortresses” have emerged where election results are predetermined. He called for vigilance against unchecked migration, arguing that illegal entrants burden national resources and impact employment, healthcare, and education.
Religious conversions: A growing concern
Dhankhar raised alarms over religious conversions through “allurements and temptations,” condemning efforts that exploit vulnerable communities. He insisted that faith should be a matter of personal choice, not coercion, and warned against financially backed attempts to alter religious demographics.
Polarized politics and democratic disruptions
Addressing the divisive political climate, Dhankhar lamented the erosion of meaningful dialogue. “Politics has become polarized, and core national values are being sidelined,” he said. He criticized disruptions in Parliament, stressing that democratic institutions must uphold debate and deliberation, not descend into disorder.
Call for national unity and social responsibility
Dhankhar urged citizens to counter anti-national narratives and foster nationalistic values. He called for social counseling to address political intolerance, urging youth and senior citizens to create an ecosystem that strengthens democratic principles.
The event, attended by Kerala Governor RV Arlekar and former Union Minister V Muraleedharan, honoured P Parameswaran, whom Dhankhar described as a key thinker in Hindu philosophy and a champion of national unity.
