NHRC marks 31st Foundation Day, highlights India’s human rights record

New Delhi: Vice President Dhankhar praises Bharat’s commitment to human rights at NHRC’s national conference on rights of older persons on Friday in Vigyan Bhavan. The event brought together members of the judiciary, diplomats, senior government officials, human rights defenders, and civil society representatives, underscoring India’s role as a global leader in promoting human rights across borders.

Vice President praises India’s human rights record

Marking the 31st Foundation Day of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar lauded India’s exceptional human rights record, particularly for minorities and vulnerable groups. Speaking at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, Dhankhar emphasized that isolated incidents should not overshadow India’s progress in upholding human rights. He criticized certain entities for using human rights as a tool of foreign policy, urging for a unified stance against global human rights violations.

India’s commitment to human rights in action

Vice President Dhankhar pointed out that India continues to support over 850 million people with free rations since the COVID-19 pandemic, regardless of caste, class, or creed. He highlighted India’s recent strides in non-discriminatory development, showcasing efforts like affordable housing, tap water access, and internet connectivity, all aimed at benefiting every section of society.

NHRC’s role in safeguarding human rights

NHRC Acting Chairperson Vijaya Bharathi Sayani emphasized the commission’s efforts to protect the dignity and rights of marginalized communities, including transgender persons. She also spotlighted NHRC’s focus on environmental rights and the need for sustainable practices. Over the past year, the NHRC has conducted inquiries and visits, addressing critical human rights violations such as custodial deaths and bonded labour.

NHRC’s expanding global role

NHRC Secretary General Bharat Lal highlighted the commission’s efforts to register and resolve over 68,000 complaints in the past year, disbursing Rs 17 crore in relief. Lal also underscored the NHRC’s collaboration with international bodies like the Asia Pacific Forum of Human Rights and the Global Alliance for National Human Rights Institutions, fostering global human rights dialogues.
