CBI Arrests NF Railway Engineer in Assam Bribery Case
Over Clearance of Contractor’s ₹20 Lakh Bill

Silchar-Guwahati-New Delhi : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Senior Section Engineer (SSE) of the Carriage and Wagon (C&W) Department of Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway, Silchar, Assam, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe in exchange for clearing a contractor’s pending payment bill.
According to officials, the CBI registered a case on June 13, 2026, following a complaint that a bill of nearly ₹20 lakh, related to work already completed by a railway contractor, was pending approval with the accused officer. The complainant alleged that when he approached the engineer seeking clearance of the bill, the official demanded an illegal commission equivalent to one percent of the pending amount.
The complaint further stated that during a meeting on June 12, the accused engineer allegedly insisted on receiving the bribe before processing and approving the contractor’s payment. Acting on the complaint, the CBI launched a verification process and subsequently organized a trap operation.
During the operation, CBI officials reportedly caught the accused officer red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹20,000 from the complainant. The accused was immediately taken into custody.
Investigators said the arrest highlights the agency’s continued efforts to combat corruption within public institutions and ensure transparency in government departments. The case has drawn attention to alleged irregularities in the processing of contractors’ payments and the misuse of official authority for personal gain.
Following the arrest, the CBI initiated searches at the residential premises of the accused officer to gather additional evidence related to the case. Officials indicated that documents, financial records, and other materials are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
The arrested railway official is scheduled to be produced before the competent court in Guwahati on June 14, 2026. The agency is expected to seek further custodial interrogation to determine whether similar demands were made from other contractors and to identify any wider network involved in such activities.
The investigation remains in progress, and the CBI has stated that all aspects of the case, including the financial transactions and administrative processes connected to the pending bill, are being thoroughly examined.
The latest action serves as a reminder of the government’s zero-tolerance policy toward corruption and reinforces the role of investigative agencies in ensuring accountability within public sector organizations. Further developments are expected as the probe advances and additional evidence is analyzed by the agency.
