NHRC seeks reports on bus fire and hospital lift death

By Doruvu Paul Jagan Babu: Assistant Chief Editor

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of two separate incidents— a fatal bus fire in Rajasthan and a malfunctioning hospital lift in Jammu—terming both as grave violations of human rights and seeking detailed reports from the respective state authorities.

Bus fire near Jaipur kills two labourers

The Commission acted on media reports that a private bus carrying more than 50 labourers caught fire after goods loaded on its roof came into contact with an overhead 11 KV power line near Manoharpur village on the Jaipur–Delhi highway on 29 October 2025.
Two labourers died and ten others sustained injuries. The victims were travelling from Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh, to a brick kiln in Rajasthan.

Taking serious note of the reported negligence, the NHRC issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Rajasthan, seeking a detailed report within two weeks.

Negligence alleged in Jammu hospital lift accident

In another case, the NHRC took cognizance of a media report on the death of a 58-year-old woman at a Super Speciality Hospital in Jammu due to a malfunctioning lift. The lift allegedly shot upward abruptly as the woman stepped inside, causing severe injuries. Her family alleged that no lift operator or security personnel were present and that there were no warning notices regarding technical issues.

It reportedly took 15 minutes to rescue the victim, who later died in the ICU after five days of treatment. The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Jammu & Kashmir, calling for a detailed report within two weeks.

Commission flags ‘serious human rights concerns’

In both incidents, the NHRC observed that the reported facts indicate alarming administrative negligence, resulting in loss of life and violations of basic human rights. The Commission has sought accountability and corrective measures from the concerned authorities.
