New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report alleging inhuman treatment of toddlers at a creche operating within the premises of an IT company in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Observing that the allegations, if true, constitute serious violations of human rights, the Commission has sought detailed reports from the Karnataka Government and police within two weeks.
NHRC seeks report from Karnataka government
The Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of Karnataka and the Director General of Police, directing them to submit a comprehensive report on the incident within two weeks.
The NHRC observed that the allegations reported in the media raise grave concerns regarding the safety, dignity, and rights of young children entrusted to institutional care.
Videos allegedly exposed abuse inside creche
According to media reports published on 2 July 2026, the alleged abuse came to light after a Child Helpline official received videos purportedly showing nannies subjecting toddlers to cruel and degrading treatment.
The videos reportedly captured multiple incidents of abuse involving children whose parents, employed at the IT campus, had left them at the creche during working hours.
Allegations of inhuman treatment
The media report alleged that the toddlers were subjected to shocking acts of cruelty, including:
Being placed inside a washing machine.
Having water sprayed into their mouths using a toilet jet spray.
Being locked inside toilets to silence them.
Being forced to sit on Western-style commodes.
Being threatened whenever they cried.
The Commission noted that, if established, such acts would amount to serious violations of the children’s human rights and dignity.
Creche temporarily closed
Following the emergence of the allegations, the creche has reportedly been temporarily closed as a precautionary measure pending further inquiry.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether lapses occurred in the supervision, management, and protection of children at the facility.
Focus on child safety and accountability
The NHRC’s intervention underscores the importance of ensuring safe, secure, and child-friendly environments in daycare facilities, particularly those serving working parents.
The Commission’s inquiry is expected to examine the facts of the case, identify accountability where necessary, and assess whether adequate safeguards were in place to protect the welfare and rights of the children entrusted to the creche.
