NHRC seeks report on gang rape of woman at Gopalpur

New Delhi: Taking suo motu cognizance of a disturbing media report, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to Odisha’s top officials following the alleged gang rape of a 20-year-old college student by about 10 men at Gopalpur sea beach in Ganjam district on June 15, 2025.

Commission flags serious human rights violation

The NHRC, in its statement, said that if the allegations reported in the media are true, they amount to a grave violation of human rights. The Commission has directed the Odisha Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police to submit a comprehensive report within two weeks.

Details of the incident

According to the report published on June 16, the victim had gone to the beach with a male friend to celebrate a local festival when a group of men allegedly overpowered her friend and then sexually assaulted her. The horrifying incident has triggered shock and outrage across the region.

NHRC demands investigation and victim support status

The NHRC has asked the Odisha authorities to provide details on the current status of the police investigation, the victim’s medical condition, and any compensation or counseling extended to her by the state government.

Medical examination and detentions

Following the incident, the survivor was sent to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for a medical examination. Police officials have reportedly detained seven suspects so far, and further investigation is underway.

Growing demand for accountability and justice

The case has prompted strong reactions from citizens and human rights advocates, who are demanding swift justice and stronger safety measures for women in public spaces, particularly tourist areas like Gopalpur beach.
