Women demand removal of liquor shop, CPM extends support

Amalapuram – Andhra Pradesh: Women from Machavaram village in Ambajipet Peta Mandal, P Gannavaram constituency, Konaseema district, staged a dharna at the Excise Superintendent’s office in Amalapuram on Thursday, demanding the removal of a wine shop (Satya Wines) located between Dalit villages along the main road. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPM] district committee extended its support to the agitation, with CPM district convener Karem Venkateswara Rao joining the protest.
Unresolved grievances spark outrage
The protesting women expressed their frustration over the authorities’ inaction, saying that repeated appeals had gone unanswered. They vowed to continue their agitation until the liquor shop was removed, citing its adverse impact on local communities.
Dalit community voices concerns
Dalit residents condemned the establishment of the liquor shop near the Ambedkar statue, calling it disrespectful and inappropriate. Protesters also demanded the removal of the shop adjacent to Venkateswara colony in Ambajipet Machavaram, saying that its presence was disrupting the social environment.
CPM warns of intensified protests
CPM district secretary Kaarem Venkateswara Rao issued a warning, saying that if the shop was not removed, the party would launch a direct protest. The demonstration, organized by CPM, also saw the participation of CPM department secretary Bimaala Srinu and other supporters, who reiterated their commitment to fighting against liquor shop placements that negatively impact marginalized communities.
