NHRC probes nursing student’s death amid harassment claims

New Delhi: The NHRC has launched a suo motu probe into the death of a third-year nursing student in Kasaragod, Kerala, who died on March 22, 2025, after a suicide attempt allegedly triggered by hostel warden harassment.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has stepped in following the tragic death of a nursing student in Kerala, spotlighting allegations of workplace harassment. The student, who attempted suicide three months prior, succumbed to her injuries, prompting the NHRC to demand answers from state authorities within four weeks.
Tragic end: Student dies after coma
On March 22, 2025, a third-year nursing student in Kasaragod district passed away after three months in a coma, following a suicide attempt in her hostel room. Initially treated at a private hospital in Mangaluru, she was later shifted to Kozhikode Medical College, where she remained critical until her death.
Harassment allegations: Warden under fire
A media report on March 23, 2025, revealed fellow students’ accusations against the hostel management, alleging the deceased faced relentless mental harassment from the warden. They claimed the pressure persisted even when the student was unwell, pushing her to the brink.
NHRC action: Report demanded
The NHRC, citing a “serious violation of human rights” if the allegations hold, issued notices to Kerala’s Chief Secretary and Director General of Police on March 25, 2025. The Commission has called for a detailed report within four weeks to investigate the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
