By Doruvu Paul Jagan Babu: Assistant Chief Editor

New Delhi: India has achieved a historic milestone in coal production, surpassing 1 billion tonnes (BT) on March 20, 2025, during the fiscal year 2024-25. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed this feat, calling it a “proud moment for India” and emphasizing its significance in strengthening the country’s energy security, economic growth, and self-reliance.

PM applauds historic achievement in energy security

Prime Minister Modi took to social media platform X, stating:

“Crossing the monumental milestone of 1 billion tonnes of coal production is a remarkable achievement, highlighting our commitment to energy security, economic growth, and self-reliance. This feat also reflects the dedication and hard work of all those associated with the sector.”*

Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G Kishan Reddy, also celebrated the achievement, sharing the news on X.

India’s coal sector: A pillar of energy security

India relies on coal for approximately 55% of its energy needs, with 74% of its electricity generated by coal-based power plants. The record-breaking production highlights the sector’s crucial role in ensuring energy security and economic stability.

The milestone was made possible by the collective efforts of Coal Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), private players, and nearly 5 lakh mine workers across more than 350 coal mines. Their resilience and dedication in overcoming challenges have been instrumental in achieving this landmark.

Government reforms drive growth

India’s coal sector has witnessed significant expansion due to the Government’s strategic reforms and policies, including:

Amendments to the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act.
Opening of the coal sector to private players through commercial auctions of coal blocks.
Introduction of advanced mining technologies and optimized logistics.

These initiatives have boosted domestic coal availability, reduced dependency on imports, and enhanced the nation’s foreign exchange savings. Between April and December 2024, coal imports declined by 8.4%, saving approximately $5.43 billion (Rs 42,315.7 crore).

A step towards ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’

This achievement aligns with PM Modi’s vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and contributes to the broader goal of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’, positioning India towards complete self-reliance in the energy sector.

By continuing strategic reforms, integrating advanced mining techniques, and promoting sustainability, India is paving the way for a secure and resilient energy future.
