Lineman’s electrocution sparks NHRC action on negligence allegations

Gurugram – Haryana: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a lineman’s tragic death in Gurugram, Haryana, highlighting concerns of gross negligence by the electricity department.
NHRC issues notices
The NHRC has observed that the reported incident raises serious concerns about human rights violations. In response, it has issued notices to the Chairman of Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) and the Commissioner of Police, Gurugram, demanding a detailed report within two weeks.
The report is expected to include the status of the FIR filed in connection with the incident and details of any compensation provided to the family of the deceased.
Tragic incident in Gurugram
The incident occurred on January 21, in Sikanderpur Badha, Gurugram. A lineman with DHBVN, while working on an electricity transformer, was electrocuted and died instantly. Reports suggest that electricity supply was restored while he was still working on the transformer, leading to the fatal accident.
Family’s allegations
According to media reports published on January 22, the family of the deceased has alleged gross negligence on the part of the electricity department. They claim that improper safety measures and a lack of coordination led to the fatal electrocution.
NHRC’s concern over safety protocols
The NHRC’s intervention has raised questions about the enforcement of safety protocols and accountability within electricity departments. The commission has emphasized the need for immediate corrective measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The response from DHBVN and Gurugram Police will be closely monitored as this case unfolds, determining the accountability for the loss of life and addressing the family’s grievances.
