New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the alleged sexual abuse of a Scheduled Caste girl in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district, calling for urgent action and detailed reports from state authorities.

NHRC demands action and accountability

The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Kerala, requesting a comprehensive report on the case. The report must detail the status of the FIRs, medical care and counseling provided to the victim, and any compensation measures. The Commission highlighted the seriousness of the alleged human rights violations involved.

Victim’s allegations and investigation progress

According to a media report dated January 15, 2025, the victim, now 18, accused multiple individuals of sexual abuse. The case unraveled after teachers at her educational institution noticed behavioral changes and referred her for counseling by the Child Welfare Committee. Authorities have so far registered 30 FIRs, leading to the arrest of 44 people.

Out of 59 accused, two individuals are reportedly absconding abroad, while 13 others remain at large. Law enforcement agencies are coordinating efforts to apprehend those still evading justice.
