Roundtable calls for Amit Shah’s resignation over Ambedkar remarks

By Doruvu Paul Jagan Babu:Bureau Chief

Vijayawada – Andhra Pradesh: The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), along with left parties, public organizations, and student bodies, convened a roundtable meeting to pass a resolution demanding the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The resolution comes in the wake of Shah’s controversial remarks, which allegedly mocked Dr. B R Ambedkar, sparking outrage across political and social groups. The resolution will be forwarded to the President of India.

A Call for accountability

APCC Chief YS Sharmila condemned Shah’s comments, labeling them an insult to Ambedkar, the framer of the Indian Constitution. She emphasized that BJP leaders lack respect for Ambedkar’s ideology, referring to him as a “fashionist.” Sharmila accused the BJP of harbouring caste and religious biases, conducting selfish politics, and attempting to rewrite the nation’s history. She highlighted incidents such as Godhra and Manipur as examples of BJP’s divisive agenda, alongside allegations of the party’s financial favoritism toward industrialists like Adani.

Unified demand for resignation

CPI leader Ramakrishna echoed these sentiments, asserting that BJP’s disdain for the Constitution stems from its ideological alignment with the Manusmriti. He alleged that the BJP seeks to replace constitutional values with RSS ideologies. He criticized the party for sidelining minorities and disrespecting freedom fighters while indulging in crony capitalism. Ramakrishna reiterated the need for Shah’s immediate resignation and urged all political parties to condemn his remarks.

Insults against Ambedkar: A national concern

Ex-MLC Laxman Rao said that Amit Shah’s remarks are part of a broader RSS agenda that undermines Ambedkar’s legacy. Rao accused the BJP of systematically dismantling constitutional principles to impose its ideological narrative.

CPM leader Babu Rao also pointed out that BJP leaders, including Shah, consistently disregard Ambedkar’s contributions, prioritizing Modi’s leadership over constitutional values. He called for cross-party condemnation of Shah’s remarks, emphasizing the urgent need for collective action against BJP’s growing influence.

A dangerous political climate

Participants at the roundtable criticized BJP’s “one nation, one election” proposal as an attempt to centralize power and weaken regional parties. Leaders expressed concerns over BJP’s dominance in Andhra Pradesh, accusing regional parties like TDP, YSRCP, and Janasena of being complicit in BJP’s agenda. The APCC accused Pawan Kalyan of acting as a BJP tool and demanded that all regional parties take a stand against Amit Shah’s comments to protect democratic values.

Resolution for justice and respect

The roundtable unanimously resolved to demand Amit Shah’s resignation and an apology from the BJP for the alleged insults to Ambedkar. Leaders affirmed their commitment to the “Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan” campaign to protect constitutional values and resist attempts to undermine the legacy of Ambedkar and other freedom fighters.
