New Delhi & Andhra Pradesh: A delegation of women leaders from the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) met National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Acting Chairperson Vijaya Bharati Sayani in Delhi on Tuesday to address increasing violence against women in Andhra Pradesh. Led by MLC Varadu Kalyani, the group included YSRCP Women’s Wing President, MP Dr. Tanujarani, MP Gurumurthy and former MPs Chinta Anuradha and Madhavi.
Allegations of negligence and inaction
The YSRCP representatives submitted a formal complaint highlighting incidents of sexual assault and murder of 77 women under the coalition government. The complaint accused Chief Minister and Home Minister of neglecting women’s safety, alleging a lack of attention to these crimes due to involvement in “illegal liquor and sand operations.” The YSRCP leaders alleged this negligence has led to increasing insecurity for women statewide.
Disha App deactivation raises alarms
In their appeal, the YSRCP leaders expressed concern over the “lamp in the wind” situation for women’s safety following the deactivation of the Disha App, a safety tool intended to provide rapid assistance for women. They urged the NHRC to address these issues promptly and requested measures to ensure women’s safety.
Call for urgent state action
YSRCP leaders appealed for NHRC’s intervention, stressing the need for the state government to take immediate, concrete steps to curb the rise in violence and provide robust protection for women in Andhra Pradesh.
