KVPS appeals to SC Commission over rising Dalit violence in AP

By Doruvu Paul Jagan Babu:Bureau Chief

New Delhi: A delegation led by KVPS General Secretary Andra Malyadri, including Supreme Court Advocate Pothuri Suresh Kumar, Railway SC/ST Employees Welfare Association Secretary G Paparao, and DSMM National Leader Shailendra, met with SC National Commission Chairman Salava Kumar and Director Vaddepalli Ramachandra on Monday, urging immediate intervention in the escalating violence against Dalits in Andhra Pradesh. The delegation submitted a memorandum calling for swift action to address the growing injustices faced by Dalits across the state.

Rising caste-based violence and police inaction

The delegation expressed deep concern over the consistent failure of both current and past state governments to curb caste-based discrimination, attacks, and murders targeting Dalits. They highlighted the inefficiency of vigilance monitoring committees, stating that meetings were not being held at various levels, which exacerbates the issue. The leaders also accused the police of not registering FIRs in many cases, while Dalits often find themselves entangled in counter-cases. “The lack of police support and government oversight is further marginalizing the Dalit community,” Malyadri said during the meeting.

Backlog posts and reservation Issues

The delegation raised issues concerning unfilled SC/ST backlog posts, lack of promotions for Dalit employees, and poor implementation of reservations. These systemic failures, they argued, are contributing to ongoing inequality and social injustice. A formal petition was submitted to the Commission outlining these grievances.

SC Commission promises probe

In response, SC National Director Vaddepalli Ramachandra assured the delegation that the Commission would investigate the situation in Andhra Pradesh. “We will soon visit the state to thoroughly examine the issues raised and ensure corrective measures are taken,” Ramachandra said. The Commission emphasized its commitment to protecting the rights of Dalits and ensuring justice prevails in cases of violence and discrimination.

This meeting marks a significant step in escalating the concerns of the Dalit community to the national level, and the SC Commission’s forthcoming investigation may pave the way for stronger protections and enforcement of Dalit rights in Andhra Pradesh.
