Welfare schemes in Tamil Nadu are a blueprint for British Labour Party’s success : SSD

By Doruvu Paul Jagan Babu : Bureau Chief-South

Special Report:- The recent landslide victory of Keir Starmer as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom marked a significant milestone for the Labour Party, ending a 14-year period without control. Central to this success were three major welfare schemes inspired by the Tamil Nadu government, which have been instrumental in improving the lives of its citizens.

Free breakfast for children

The Labour Party’s manifesto included a promise of free breakfast for children in every primary school, a scheme first introduced by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin. This initiative has been praised for addressing hunger, boosting student attendance, and enhancing academic performance.

New colleges for skill development

Drawing from Tamil Nadu’s Non Mudhalvan scheme, the Labour Party proposed the establishment of new colleges aimed at equipping youth with industry-specific skills. This initiative focuses on youth empowerment and vocational training, preparing students for better employment opportunities.

Affordable housing

The Kalaingnar Kanav Illu (Kalaingnar Dream House) scheme, which provides affordable housing to economically disadvantaged families, inspired Labour’s low rent housing policy. This scheme ensures that everyone has access to decent housing.

Achievements of M K Stalin’s government

Strengthened healthcare infrastructure, upgraded hospitals, and launched various health schemes. Attracted investment, promoted industrial growth, and created employment opportunities. Emphasized policies for the upliftment of lower classes and promoted gender equality. Invested in roads, public transport, and urban development. Introduced e-governance initiatives for better public service delivery. Promoted green energy and sustainable development practices.

Tamil Nadu’s economic growth

Tamil Nadu stands second in contribution to India’s GDP, with a growth rate of 8.19% compared to the national rate of 7.24%. The state has effectively controlled inflation, reducing it to 5.97% from the national rate of 6.65%. Tamil Nadu tops the Export Readiness Index and leads in the export of electronic goods, and has moved from 14th to 3rd position in industrial investment attractiveness.

Under the Kalaingar Magalir Urimai Thittam, 1,15,16,292 women receive ₹1,000 monthly. Women have traveled 445 crore times for free in government buses under the bus travel scheme. The Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam scheme has benefited over 1 crore people. 16 lakh students benefit from the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme.

Call for broader implementation

Bethala Sudharshan, Bharateeya Bouddha Mahasabha and Samata Sainik Dal State President, suggests that M K Stalin should consider extending the DMK party’s influence to Andhra Pradesh, aligning with other Bahujan parties for the 2029 elections. This could potentially elevate a BC leader to the position of Chief Minister in Andhra Pradesh, similar to the achievements seen in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka.

Bethala Sudharshan’s opinions highlight the transformative impact of Tamil Nadu’s welfare schemes, which not only serve as a model for other Indian states but have also played a crucial role in shaping the Labour Party’s successful policies in the UK.
