Andhra Pradesh: The Andhra Pradesh government has invoked the Emergency Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) to prohibit strikes in power utilities across the state for a period of six months, effective May 10.
ESMA invoked to ensure uninterrupted power services
Special Chief Secretary of the Energy Department, Vijayanand, announced that the ban applies to all key power sector entities—TRANSCO, GENCO, and DISCOMs. The order is aimed at ensuring uninterrupted power supply and operational stability across the state.
Applicability and duration
The strike ban will remain in force for six months starting May 10, 2025. It falls under the provisions of the Andhra Pradesh Essential Services Maintenance Act, 1971, which empowers the government to restrict disruptions in critical services.
Context and implications
The move is seen as a preemptive step to prevent any industrial unrest or potential service interruptions in the power sector. It may impact negotiations between employee unions and management, particularly regarding pending demands or reforms.
