By Doruvu Paul Jagan Babu:Bureau Chief

Andhra Pradesh: Former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy visited the flood-affected areas of Vijayawada, including Singhnagar, to assess the situation and provide counsel to the victims. During his visit, he highlighted the need for better flood management systems and offered suggestions to prevent such disasters in the future and to mitigate the impact on vulnerable communities.

Systemic gaps in flood management
YS Jagan pointed out the inadequate flood cushioning and delayed response measures that contributed to the severe flooding in Vijayawada. He stressed that better management of water levels in upper dams could have reduced the flood surge.

Need for effective communication
The former Chief Minister stressed the necessity of alerting the public in advance, especially when floodgates are opened, to ensure that people have enough time to evacuate safely.
Relief efforts and support systems
Jagan Reddy highlighted the absence of immediate relief camps and essential services for flood victims. He recalled that during his tenure, a well-established volunteer and secretariat system ensured quick assistance, moving people to safety and providing financial support.

Call for improved governance
YS Jagan urged the current administration to focus on governance and disaster preparedness. He advised CM Chandrababu to prioritize the needs of the people and enhance the state’s capacity to handle such disasters effectively. He also recommended that collectors be more actively involved in overseeing these efforts.
