Andhra Pradesh: The relay hunger strike demanding land rights for Dalits of Old Kadapa, scheduled from 28 at the Collector’s office, was temporarily suspended, according to the Dalit Tribal Rights Struggle Association. The decision was announced by Honorary President Venkatesh at a press meet held at the DGHPS office on Sunday.
Agitation temporarily suspended amidst ongoing efforts
Venkatesh said the decision to pause the protest was made in view of a possible official resolution. Despite two years of relentless efforts through petitions to various departments, there had been no response, prompting a series of protests. The relay hunger strike began on June 16 near the RTO office and intensified with a symbolic siege on July 14. With no significant response, the strike at the Collector’s office, scheduled from July 28, was put on hold.
Awareness campaigns and mobilization across Dalit areas
To strengthen the movement, the association has been conducting awareness campaigns, distributing pamphlets, and organizing seminars in Dalit and tribal areas over the past ten days. Venkatesh said mass mobilization efforts will continue in the coming days to bring wider attention to the issue.
Dialogue with officials expected
As per recent developments, DSP has called for a meeting involving both parties, the Kadapa Tahsildar, and Chinnachowk police to examine land ownership documents and identify rightful claimants.
“We welcome a resolution under DSP’s leadership and believe in dialogue with authorities. We respect the system and hope for a just outcome,” Venkatesh said.
Warning of renewed agitation if justice denied
However, the association warned that if a fair resolution is not reached, they will resume protests. “If discussions fail to yield justice, we will restart the agitation legally and with police permission,” Venkatesh affirmed.
Activists including Madagalam Prasad, Chinna Subbaiah, Pedda Obulesu, Veera Subbaiah, and Vijay Kumar participated in the press meet and reiterated their commitment to the cause.
