By Doruvu Paul Jagan Babu:Bureau Chief

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of media reports highlighting a sharp increase in suicides among tribal communities on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala. With 23 deaths reported in 2024 alone, the NHRC has sought urgent action and accountability from the state government.
Rise in tribal suicides sparks concern
Media reports indicate that tribal settlements, particularly in Peringammala Panchayat, have witnessed 138 suicides between 2011 and 2022. After two years of relative calm, the disturbing trend has resurfaced, claiming 23 lives in 2024, mostly among individuals aged 20-30.

NHRC raises alarm over human rights violations
The NHRC has observed that the suicides highlight serious violations of the right to life and the socio-economic and cultural rights of the Scheduled Tribes. The Commission emphasized the state’s responsibility to ensure the safety and security of vulnerable communities, especially in the face of such grave human rights concerns.
Notices issued to Kerala authorities
The NHRC has issued notices to Kerala’s Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, demanding a detailed report within two weeks. The report should include:
Status of FIRs registered and arrests made.
Compensation provided to the next of kin of the deceased.
Measures taken or proposed to prevent further suicides.
Underlying causes highlighted by families and activists
According to tribal activists and families, suicides are driven by:
Extreme social pressures and stress.
Harassment related to inter-community marriages and relationships.
Growing issues with liquor and sex rackets in the region.

Call for immediate action
The NHRC has stressed the need for comprehensive intervention to address the root causes of this crisis. The state government is expected to take prompt measures to ensure such incidents do not recur and to restore confidence and security within tribal communities.
