KVPS urges CM to combat caste discrimination with dedicated post

By Doruvu Paul Jagan Babu:Bureau Chief

Andhra Pradesh: The Anti-Caste Discrimination Struggle Society (KVPS) has submitted a letter to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, calling for the creation of a nominated post in the Cabinet to tackle caste discrimination and untouchability, alongside immediate appointment of SC and ST Commission members with judicial powers.

Call for a dedicated post to eradicate caste discrimination

KVPS proposed the establishment of a nominated post within the Cabinet to spearhead awareness campaigns against caste-based discrimination and untouchability. Highlighting the pervasive issue, they emphasized the need for systemic intervention to promote constitutional values and modern egalitarian principles.

Demand for judicial rights to SC/ST Commission

The organization appealed for the immediate appointment of a Chairman and members to the SC/ST Commission, urging that they be vested with judicial powers to investigate atrocities, ensure justice for victims, and foster a sense of security among marginalized communities.

Plight of Dalits in Andhra Pradesh

KVPS detailed the struggles faced by Dalits across the state:

Denial of basic rights: Dalits are barred from entering temples or participating in religious processions in some villages, and face discrimination in housing rentals in urban areas.

Social and economic marginalization: Dalits endure humiliation and exclusion, even being attacked for using public amenities or occupying spaces deemed “unfit” for them.

Caste-based violence: KVPS cited cases of insults, physical attacks, rapes, and murders targeting Dalits, often exacerbated by religious or casteist motives.

Persistence of discrimination in public services

The letter shed light on caste-based inequities in rural infrastructure development and urban sanitation services. Dalit colonies, for instance, are often neglected in drainage maintenance and road construction, reflecting systemic apathy.

Appeal to counter the caste Arrogance perpetuated by Sanatana Dharma

KVPS warned against efforts to legitimize caste hierarchy under the guise of promoting Sanatana Dharma. They urged the government to counter such regressive sentiments by fostering a culture rooted in constitutional values and equality, especially among children and youth.

KVPS activism and resistance

KVPS activists continue to advocate for Dalit rights at the grassroots level, engaging with field officers and, when necessary, organizing resistance programs to challenge local authorities’ inaction.

Urgent steps to prevent further atrocities

The organization stressed the growing incidents of attacks on Dalits and urged the government to act decisively. They proposed that the SC/ST Commission should visit affected areas, ensure justice for victims, and reinforce the government’s commitment to protecting Dalit rights.

KVPS emphasized that addressing caste discrimination is crucial for Andhra Pradesh’s modern progress and requested the Chief Minister’s immediate intervention to bring about lasting change.
