Kurnool: Andhra Pradesh’s coalition government is facing backlash after announcing a significant hike in electricity tariffs, contradicting its election promise to keep rates stable. The increase, which places an additional burden of approximately Rs 17,800 crore on consumers, has sparked widespread protest, with Left parties organizing a roundtable meeting to denounce the unprecedented hike.
Unprecedented burden on electricity consumers
Beginning in December, electricity consumers in Andhra Pradesh will shoulder an additional Rs 6,078 crore in costs, a burden that CPI General Secretary K Ramakrishna described as “unprecedented” in both united and bifurcated Andhra Pradesh. This marks one of the steepest hikes in recent memory, prompting concerns about the financial strain on households and businesses.
Left parties rally against electricity hike
Left parties are going to hold a roundtable meeting scheduled for November 7 to protest the steep rise in electricity rates. Speaking to the press in Kurnool on Tuesday, Ramakrishna criticized the government for reneging on its campaign promise. “This hike is a betrayal of the public’s trust, especially given the assurances made before the elections,” he said.
Broken promises on electricity charges
During its election campaign, the coalition government promised not to increase electricity charges, a commitment that resonated with many voters. However, the recent decision to implement a steep rate hike has left citizens feeling deceived. Ramakrishna emphasized the importance of holding the government accountable for its promises, especially on essential services like electricity.
Impact on citizens and vusinesses
This hike would heavily impact ordinary citizens and industries alike, with the potential to increase the cost of living and disrupt small businesses. “People are already struggling with inflation, and this added expense will only make things worse,” Ramakrishna warned.
Further actions by opposition parties
Left parties have vowed to continue their protests until the government reverses its decision. Opposition parties and public associations should join the fight against the tariff increase, calling for a unified stand to protect consumers from excessive financial burdens.
