New Delhi: Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, Minister of State for Education, inaugurated a one-day workshop focused on writing higher education textbooks in Indian languages, jointly organized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti (BBS) on Tuesday. The event saw participation from over 150 Vice Chancellors, eminent academicians, and other dignitaries.

Dr. Majumdar emphasized the importance of creating study materials in regional languages to reflect India’s linguistic diversity and enhance student access to knowledge in their mother tongues. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 for inspiring this initiative aimed at nation-building.

Prof. Chamu Krishna Shastry, Chairman of BBS, stressed the need for a Bharatiya Bhasha Ecosystem, while UGC Chairman Prof. M Jagadesh Kumar shared valuable insights. Secretary of Higher Education, K Sanjay Murthy, launched three significant projects during the valedictory session: ASMITA, Bahubhasha Shabdkosh, and Real-time Translation Architecture, all aimed at enhancing educational resources in Indian languages through technology.

The workshop’s discussions resulted in plans to create new textbooks in 12 regional languages, standardize vocabularies, and incorporate Indian Knowledge Systems. The initiative aims to produce 22,000 books in 22 scheduled languages over the next five years, reflecting a robust commitment to enriching India’s educational landscape.
