Acting on a news report dated February 16, 2026, the Commission noted that the explosion occurred on February 15 while a chemical storage tank was being dismantled as part of efforts to relocate the unit. Two persons reportedly died in the blast, and four others sustained severe injuries.

The NHRC stated that the reported circumstances warrant scrutiny, particularly if negligence and non-adherence to safety protocols contributed to the tragedy.

The Commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of Karnataka and the Superintendent of Police, Mandya, directing them to submit a comprehensive report within two weeks.

The report has been sought on key aspects, including:

Allegations of safety violations

According to local residents quoted in the media report, the blast was allegedly caused by negligence and failure to follow mandatory safety norms during the dismantling of the chemical storage tank.

The Commission observed that if these allegations are substantiated, the incident would amount to a serious violation of the victims’ right to life and safety.

Focus on accountability and relief

By seeking a time-bound response, the NHRC has signalled its intent to examine accountability and ensure that adequate relief and compensation are extended to the affected families.

Further action by the Commission will depend on the report submitted by the state authorities.
