By Doruvu Paul Jagan Babu: Assistant Chief Editor

Tamil Nadu: On 8th July 2025, tragedy struck in Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore district when a passenger train collided with a school van at an unmanned level crossing. The devastating impact led to the death of three children and left several others injured. Alarming reports suggest the level crossing gate was open at the time of the incident, even as a train approached.
NHRC initiates probe, seeks detailed reports
Taking suo motu cognizance of media reports, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Chairman of the Railway Board, the Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu, and the State Director General of Police. The Commission has called for a detailed report within two weeks, including updates on the health condition of the injured children.
The NHRC observed that, if the reported facts are accurate, the incident amounts to a serious violation of human rights, particularly of the children and families affected.
Underpass sanctioned but delayed for over a year
According to a media report dated 9th July 2025, an underpass had already been sanctioned by the Southern Railway to replace the level crossing. However, construction has been delayed for over a year, allegedly due to the District Collector not granting permission. The inaction has now been tragically underscored by the preventable loss of young lives.
