Andhra Pradesh: The Chittoor District Medical and Health Department has launched a focused vaccination campaign to eliminate measles and rubella by 2026, targeting high-risk and underserved populations as part of a nationwide effort.
First phase of special drive begins May 26
District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) Dr. DT Sudharani and District Immunization Officer Dr. Chittoor Hanumantha Rao announced that the first phase of the measles and rubella (MR) special vaccination drive will run from May 26 to 31. This is part of a three-month intensified campaign directed by the Government of India in May, June, and July.
Targeting dropouts and high-risk areas
A door-to-door survey has already been conducted to identify children under five who missed their first or second MR doses, those who dropped out, and those whose parents refused vaccination. Special attention will be given to migrant families, urban slum dwellers, and those living in construction sites, brick kilns, fishing communities, and employment guarantee work zones.
Ensuring vaccine safety and protocol
Health teams are instructed to maintain cold chain logistics, follow session protocols, and carry Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) kits to every session. Timely communication with mothers and caretakers is also emphasized to ensure maximum participation.
Real-time data and monitoring
Officials stressed the importance of uploading beneficiary vaccination data online in real time and maintaining strict timeliness of sessions. Field workers are urged to ensure 100% target achievement in their assigned areas.
Mission: Eliminate measles and rubella by 2026
“This is a crucial step in our goal to eradicate measles and rubella from the country by 2026,” said Dr. Sudharani. “Every session, every child, and every dose matters. Let’s make Chittoor district a model for MR elimination.
