Vijayawada – Andhra Pradesh: In a powerful cultural tribute to Dr. B R Ambedkar, the Anti-Caste Discrimination Struggle Association (KVPS) has been staging the play ‘Sangham Sharanam Gachhami’ play across Andhra Pradesh, drawing enthusiastic crowds and acclaim. As part of Ambedkar’s 134th birth anniversary celebrations, the production has already been performed around 750 times in the state.
A play spreading Ambedkar’s universal message
Speaking at a press meet held at Phule Ambedkar Bhavan in Christ Raju Puram Lime Kiln Center on Thursday, KVPS State General Secretary Andra Malyadri highlighted the broad appeal of the play. He said, “The message of Ambedkar is not limited to a few, but belongs to all of humanity.”
He added that Sangham Sharanam Gachhami natakam was launched on April 22 in Kurnool and is being staged in 19 districts of Andhra Pradesh, primarily in Dalit-majority areas. The final performance will take place on Sunday, May 18, at the Makineni Basavapunnayya Auditorium, Raghavepaku, Bandar Road, Vijayawada.
A cultural movement across languages and states
According to KVPS, the play’s popularity extends beyond Andhra Pradesh. It is also being performed in Kannada, Tamil, Marathi, Malayalam, and English in other parts of the country, symbolizing Ambedkar’s growing cultural legacy and relevance. Each staging reportedly attracts hundreds of people, who are moved by the performances and the powerful portrayal of Ambedkar’s struggle for justice and equality.
Public appeal for final Vijayawada show
KVPS NTR District Secretary G. Nataraju and Pullaiah joined Andra Malyadri in urging the public, especially residents of Vijayawada and surrounding villages, to attend the final performance in large numbers. They emphasized that this cultural effort is not merely a performance but a social awakening campaign, urging people to internalize Ambedkar’s ideals of equality, fraternity, and justice.
The organization reaffirmed its commitment to spreading Ambedkar’s philosophy through artistic and community-based platforms, especially among youth and marginalized communities.
A standing ovation to art as resistance
As the play nears its concluding show in Vijayawada, KVPS leaders noted that the tour has succeeded in not only celebrating Ambedkar but also in raising consciousness against caste discrimination — a fitting tribute during his birth anniversary year.
