Tamil Nadu: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report highlighting the ostracism of multiple families in Sambavarvadakarai town, Tenkasi district, Tamil Nadu. The incident reportedly stemmed from a legal dispute over land encroachment, with a village chief banning an entire family and later extending the ostracism to seven other families who supported them.
Families barred from local resources and social life
According to reports published on February 20, 2025, the victim families were denied access to essential local stores and community facilities. Additionally, they were forbidden from interacting with other residents, exacerbating their isolation.
Protesters arrested amidst demand for justice
In response to their ostracism, members of the affected families staged a protest outside the office of the District Collector. However, instead of addressing their grievances, the police reportedly arrested 30 people from the eight families involved.
NHRC seeks explanation from district administration
Taking a serious view of the human rights violations, the NHRC has issued a notice to the District Collector of Tenkasi, demanding a detailed report within two weeks. The Commission stated that the situation reflects grave violations of fundamental rights and requires immediate action.
Revenue officials opted for ‘Peace Talks’ instead of action
Despite the severity of the situation, reports suggest that the Revenue Divisional Officer did not take direct action against the village chief. Instead, an attempt was made to mediate a ‘peace talk’ to persuade him to revoke the ostracism order, but these efforts reportedly failed.
The NHRC’s intervention now places the spotlight on the local administration, urging corrective measures to uphold the rights and dignity of the affected families.
