President Murmu applauds NIMHANS for advancing mental health solutions

Bengaluru – Karnataka: President Droupadi Murmu commended the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) for its pioneering contributions to mental healthcare and neuroscience during its golden jubilee celebrations in Bengaluru on Friday.
NIMHANS: A global leader in mental health care
President Murmu lauded NIMHANS for its exceptional blend of innovative research, academic rigor, and patient care. Highlighting the Bellary model of community-based mental healthcare and the Tele MANAS platform, she praised the institute’s efforts to extend support nationwide. “The 53 Tele MANAS cells have assisted nearly 17 lakh people in their chosen language over the past two years,” she noted.
Shifting stigma around mental health
The President emphasized that rising awareness has made mental health care more accessible. She noted, “Unscientific beliefs and stigma associated with mental illnesses are now a matter of the past, enabling sufferers to seek help without hesitation.”
Initiatives for mental health accessibility
President Murmu appreciated initiatives like Tele MANAS, which facilitates round-the-clock counseling, and the SAMVAAD platform, designed to address mental health issues among children and adolescents.
Integrating tradition and modernity in mental health solutions
Drawing from ancient Indian wisdom, the President spoke about the importance of a spiritual framework for mental well-being. She commended NIMHANS for incorporating traditional practices like yoga alongside modern healthcare techniques to address mental and physical stress.

Concluding her address, President Murmu stressed the importance of mental health as the cornerstone of societal well-being. She expressed confidence that NIMHANS would continue to provide compassionate, high-quality care guided by knowledge and wisdom, ensuring a healthier future for all.
